Valley of Fire – Roadside Attractions

November 6, 2023

One of the best parts of staying in the Valley of Fire campground was the ability to keep exploring. Even as the sun was setting and the park was closing, we were out and about. I am calling this section the Roadside Attractions – small jaunts to view interesting items very close to the road.

All of these sights can be found right off the main Valley of Fire highway, and all are well signed.

As the sun sets, our campervan is the lone vehicle on the Valley of Fire highway. We saved the Roadside Attractions for the end of the day. We had these super popular places all to ourselves as the park neared closing time.

John Clark Memorial

Sergeant Clark did NOT have an easy go of it.
He was well remembered though.

Petrified Log

As a kid, didn’t you think that petrified logs were going to be much more common? It was a thrill for me to find this one.

This petrified log is protected inside a chain link fence.

The Cabins

This was one of the best finds. We explored each and every cabin. Very interesting.

Not all cabins were built alike. Some were more fancy.
Very well built using natural and local materials.
This was one of the fancier cabins with a nicer fireplace. Wooden beam ceilings.
The floor is flat stone, but very sandy from lack of cleaning/no doors or windows. I’m not sure if there was glass in the windows or not.

Critters

We found this furry little wonder walking right through the campground. So glad I was in a campervan and not a tent.

These were the fun things we got to explore along the Valley of Fire highway. While we came for the hiking and the views, these small side trips were definitely a highlight and well worth visiting.

I love all things mountains! I live next door to the Canadian Rocky Mountains, however I travel the world to enjoy the many different mountain environments and cultures that I can. I hope you enjoy these trip reports, and that it inspires you to accomplish your own adventure goals.

  1. Good call on visiting the popular roadside attractions at the end of the day when everyone had left. The cabins are pretty cool. The CCC has done amazing work at many of the national and state parks in the US. It’s too bad it ended. I got shivers just seeing your picture of that massive spider. I wouldn’t want to be camping in a tent either!

I actually got a video of that spider trucking through the campground, but it is gross!!! I get shivers just thinking about it.

I didn’t know about the CCC. Thank you for letting me know about their other work. Yes – too bad it ended!
